KOZHIKODE: A couple from Iritty in Kannur district has become the proud parents of a test tube baby. The baby, a girl, was born to Dalia and Thomas under the medical supervision of a team of doctors of Crafts Institute of Reproductive Medicine and Research Centre established by Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS). Doctors Mohammed Ashraf and V.K. Sivadas, who led the medical team, said on Thursday that the baby, who was born on January 26, and here mother were in good health. MIMS Managing Director Abdulla Cherayakkad said the mother and child would be discharged in a week.
Dalia and Thomas, who got married on May 15, 2003, had remained childless. Tests showed Dalia was incapable of bearing children. At MIMS, doctors convinced the couple that it is possible to have a child by Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICFI), a lab procedure. The treatment started in January last year.
Under careful medical supervision frozen embryo transfer (FET) was performed on May 28. So far 14 couples have undergone similar treatment at MIMS. Five have conceived. MIMS crafts institute has the latest facilities , Dr. Abdulla said.
