IVF / ICSI is the most widely practiced assisted conception procedure in the world. In simple terms, in IVF we aspirate several eggs from the ovary, fertilizes them in the laboratory with sperm from male partner, and transfers the resulting embryos to the womb for implantation and pregnancy. Although IVF was developed to treat the couples whose principal cause of infertility is tubal damage, the technique has been found useful in those with endometriosis, sperm disorder (poor sperm counts, motility and morphology) and even unexplained infertility. Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a well established technique that enables an embryologist to manipulate both male and female gametes outside the body to maximize the probability of fertilization. This technique was initially developed for severe male factor indication where, it was not possible for the sperms to reach the egg on their own.
